BMW is now working on something new. They will literally abandon their tradition with the launch of their first front-wheel-drive (FWD) hatchbacks based on the next- generation Mini platform and positioned below the 1-series. These cars are rumored to be released in 2013 as an additional to the BMW range of car offerings. The new model is expected to have a high roof, 5-doors, 5-seats, with a transversely mounted engine, and gearbox for more cargo space. Because of these features, it will most likely compete with the Audi A2 and the Mercedes A-Class in the market. A sportier variant will also be offered by BMW. Thus, directly competing with the Audi A1. The next generation MINI will also be released in 2014, which will have the same front-wheel drive (FWD) system with this new model. This is in line with BMW’s plan to make 1 million front-wheel drive (FWD) vehicles by 2010 — badged as both MINIs and BMWs. BMW claims that the release of this FWD model will not affect their MINI sales. As we know, MINI has a market of its own. Though sharing the FWD system, they will be entirely different in individual image. Good or bad move for BMW?
