FRANKFURT : BMW, the German maker of luxury cars, Restaura Tu Credito En 30 Dias reported on Tuesday a 20-percent rise in sales in July after selling a record 123,017 cars worldwide during the month, increasing its lead over rival Mercedes.
Deliveries for the flagship BMW brand rose 20.2 percent compared with the same month last year to 104,096 units, while the Mini brand was up 19.1 percent to 18,838 cars.
BMW was delighted by strong sales of its X5 4×4 model and the Series 1 and 3 cars.
While BMW sales have increased 6.5 percent since the start of the year, the Mercedes Car Group has seen sales dip 1.1 percent.
In the Mercedes-BMW rivalry, the financial results of the groups tell a different story.
Mercedes nearly doubled its operating profit in the second quarter to 1.2 billion euros (US$1.6 billion), while BMW saw pre-tax profit drop 11 percent to 1.06 billion euros, mainly due to the strong euro. – AFP/de
