Anchorman: Will Ferrell Gets the Keys to BMW’s First Hydrogen 7

BMW has given actor Will Ferrell the keys to its first hydrogen-powered 7 Series sedan as the automaker kicks off its Hydrogen 7 Pioneer Program.

The car is not yet on sale, but BMW already has begun building the first 100 production-ready vehicles, which it intends to put into the hands of industry leaders, celebrities and politicians to help publicize the benefits of hydrogen’s clean-burning properties. BMW says 25 of those 100 street-legal cars will be given to “prominent figures” for evaluation in the U.S.

In a statement, BMW said it “believes hydrogen will replace petroleum as the long-term alternative to fossil fuel” and that “pioneers will be instrumental in helping people understand that hydrogen technology is here, it is now and it is what BMW Group believe holds the key to our future mobility.”

By giving the first cars to public figures such as Ferrell, the company said it “hopes to continue to generate support of hydrogen-drive vehicles in the short term and stimulate demand for a viable hydrogen infrastructure in the long-term.”

BMW already has placed the Hydrogen 7 into temporary service with such celebrities as Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie at the recent Hollywood premiere of Ocean’s 13 and Richard Gere and Sharon Stone at the Cinema for Peace Gala in Berlin.

What this means to you: Chances are you won’t see the local urologist driving a Hydrogen 7 anytime soon, but keep your eyes peeled around Tinseltown for that telltale whisp of water vapor.
