BMW is preparing to stretch its electric SUV line-up with the new iX4, a coupé-inspired take on its forthcoming Neue Klasse platform. Where the iX3 will play the role of upright all-rounder, the iX4 is shaping up as the sleeker, more road-focused sibling, with a lower roofline and more dramatic stance wrapped around the same next-generation hardware. Early development cars, still heavily disguised, already hint at a car that blends long-distance capability with a genuinely striking profile.

Up front, the iX4 adopts the new BMW face we’ve seen on recent concepts and the upcoming iX3, complete with a simplified nose and illuminated panels that merge grille and headlamps into a single graphic. The real change comes further back, where the traditional SUV silhouette is swapped for a fastback-style roof that flows into a steeply raked tailgate and a neat lip spoiler. Combined with large aero-optimised wheels, the proportions give the car a more athletic look than a conventional SUV, while the cleaner shape should bring aerodynamic gains as well as kerbside presence.

Those aero tweaks are not just for show. The iX4 is expected to share the Neue Klasse 50 xDrive set-up, using a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system with around 469bhp on tap and a substantial battery of roughly 108kWh. That gives it the sort of punch that suits a big BMW, with projected 0–62mph times under five seconds, yet the real headline figure is range. Thanks to the slippery bodywork and efficient powertrain, BMW is targeting up to 500 miles between charges depending on specification, pushing the iX4 into grand touring territory for electric SUVs.
Charging performance is set to back that up. With the Neue Klasse architecture capable of DC rapid charging at up to 400kW, the iX4 should be able to move from 10 to 80 per cent in a little over 20 minutes, and add roughly 200 to 230 miles in the time it takes to grab a coffee. Inside, BMW’s Panoramic iDrive will project key driving data along the base of the windscreen in place of traditional instruments, paired with a crisp, driver-oriented central touchscreen for most major functions. An even more focused M version is already in development, promising a sharper chassis and extra power in the same coupé-SUV shell, but even in standard form the iX4 looks set to be one of BMW’s most complete electric road cars yet.
