BMW 550i vs Chevy SS: Which is better?

The BMW 550i has been often compared to the Chevy SS recently and its about time we figure out which is a better car. Autoguide publishes a short comparison about these two cars to answer this question.

BMW 550i vs Chevy SS: Which is better?

The BMW 5 Series is already a very popular luxury sedan and its quite hard to beat it. The power is great for the BMW 550i but the SS stacks up quite evenly. Both are also big sedans with powerful V8 engines and are both rear-wheel drive.

Then the differences start to come in. The Chevy SS is powered by a naturally-aspirated big-block 6.2 liter V8 and delivers 415 horsepower. On the other hand, the BMW uses a 4.4 liter twin-turbocharged V8 and delivers 445 horsepower. The Chevy SS is available with either a six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual, while the BMW 550i only has an eight-speed automatic as its gearbox. For the interior, the Chevy SS is quite decent but the 5 Series gives a certain level of luxury. The BMW also comes with iDrive and various other technologies that is far advanced than those that the Chevy has. However, BMW has a higher price point and so, the Chevy is an option for those who do not want to spent that much.

Performance wise, the BMW’s twin-turbocharged engine and extra power allows it to be faster in a straight line: 0-60 mph time of 4.3 seconds. Chevy SS does this in 4.6 seconds. The Chevy handles well though due to its magnetic suspension, Brembo brakes and overall performance demeanor. It definitely is a better car than what most people think. However, the BMW 550i is very fast, very capable, and luxurious. It is very refined and offers great handling dynamics. So it really depends on which one you would prefer to have.
