2020 sales: BMW M continues to surpass competitors

With yet another record year, the BMW M GmbH continues to set the lead over Mercedes-AMG in 2020 sales. As reported, BMW M garnered total sales of 144,218 units sold in 2020 despite the pandemic, surpassing the previous year by 5.9 percent. It’s no surprise that the Mercedes-AMG decreased in sales as COVID-19 really affected all automakers. The Affalterbach-based competitor sold 125,129 units, 5.3 percent less than in 2019.

BMW M surpasses Mercedes-AMG in the 2020 sales

Last year, BMW maintained its lead with 19,000 vehicles, while there were only 3,700 units sold in 2019. Moreover, the best-sellers BMW M2, M3, and M4 were nearing their life cycle in 2020. Thus, limiting their supply in most or all markets, all year round. This makes the remarkable gap increase in 2020 all the more noteworthy.

The BMW M record sales were all thanks to the new X5 M and X6 M SUVs, which carry a high demand in the United States. The sales report also includes the M Performance Automobiles with its high-selling products, like the M340i, M340d, and the X3 M40i. As a result, the M Performance Automobiles sub-division becomes the fastest growing within the company for the last few years.

Soon enough, new products will join the M lineup in 2021. This includes highly-controversial models like G80 M3 and G82 M4, while the M440i Coupe and Convertible will hit the market worldwide. Despite the polarizing design, M3 and M4 sales are anticipated to exceed the previous F80/F82 generations. As for the brand-new M brothers, the all-wheel-drive component will be offered for the first time. Expected to bring new customers to the brand.

However, retaining the core fan base might be possible as purists will still enjoy a six-speed manual version.
