[VIDEO] BMW iX1 Showcases Power in Wet Conditions

If you’re seeking a compact Bavarian crossover with more oomph, consider the X1 M35i xDrive. It’s a new, powerful alternative to the iX1 xDrive30. BMW claims the iX1 hits 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.6 seconds. Meanwhile, the debut M Performance X1 variant achieves this in 5.4 seconds.

A fresh video shows the iX1’s quick acceleration before actual road tests measure the X1 M35i’s speed. The compact electric crossover clocked 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill in 5.73 seconds. It’s slightly off BMW’s claim, even in sub-optimal conditions. On a completely dry surface, as per CarExpert, the sprint time should be marginally quicker.

Currently, BMW only provides the dual-motor iX1 xDrive30, boasting 313 horsepower and 494 Newton metres (394 pound-feet) of torque. A less pricey, front-wheel-drive variant is expected later this year. Likely debuting in November as the iX1 eDrive20, it should offer around 200 horsepower. This potentially fills the gap left by the discontinued i3 hatchback.

In technical terms, BMW has recently introduced another purchase option for the iX1. They showcased the iX1 xDrive30L at Auto Shanghai 2023 in April as a long-wheelbase variant designed and produced in China to cater specifically to the Chinese market, providing ample rear legroom.

This year, BMW plans to unveil the new X2 alongside its electric iX2 version. While the standard-wheelbase iX1 will be manufactured in Regensburg, Germany, it will share the same CLAR platform as the combustion-engine models. BMW’s highly anticipated exclusively electric vehicles based on the Neue Klasse platform are set for release in 2025.
