Big electric SUVs are the next big thing for automakers for two reasons: buyers want them, and car companies earn a tonne of money off of them. Ignore the hyperbole you see in promotional materials and press releases about how dynamic your company is. Many luxury brands are including it in their designs, from Tesla to BMW to Mercedes to even Cadillac. Polestar has also entered the fray with an SUV that can compete with the iX.
The new Polestar 3 is a high-end electric SUV that is among the most expensive models available. It looks like it might be able to, and it doesn’t, in some respects. So, let’s have a look. Its front end is tasteful and unobtrusive, including the “Thor’s Hammer” headlight design that has become the brand’s trademark. A sleek taillight bar in the back gives it a futuristic appearance without being over the top. Polestar has perfected the art of combining cutting-edge technology with understated elegance.
The Polestar 3 is a basic, yet stylish SUV from the side. It has sleek body lines, low window sills, and a stylish roof spoiler. The Polestar 3’s design suggests it will pose a serious challenge to the luxury market’s status quo. It has a lot of nice features, but when you put them all together, the value it offers isn’t that appealing.
The Polestar 3 gets the latest, most cutting-edge version of the company’s SPA platform. The vehicle is powered by two independent electric motors that produce a combined 489 horsepower and 620 lb-ft of torque. It’s a son of a gun, indeed, but a big one at 5,696 pounds. Polestar claims it can go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, which is a tad slower than the iX xDrive50’s 4.4-second time. There is, however, an available performance option that increases output to 517 horsepower and 671 lb-ft. Even with far higher torque, the iX’s 4.6-second 0-60 mph pace is still bettered by this. A massive 111 kWh battery pack powers those motors, allowing for an EPA-estimated 300 miles of range in the base model and 270 miles with the performance pack installed.
