The BMW i3 has received lots of criticism when it comes to its range. It certainly doesn’t have the range of the Tesla Model S or Chevy Bolt, but it has continued to enjoy success on a global scale. As we speak, the BMW i3 is actually the best selling BEV in the premium compact BEV segment. It has gained more sales globally than the Mercedes-Benz B-Class, Renault Zoe and Volkswagen e-Golf in 2016.
On a global scale, every 15th BEV sold in the world was an i3. That accounts for 7.5% of all new compact BEV registrations worldwide. It has also enjoyed the same success in America where every 11th compact BEV sold was an i3. That accounts for 11.1% of new BEV registrations in the US alone.
In some countries like Norway, the success was even more heightened. There, the i3 was actually the best-selling BMW car last year — it even sold twice as much as the BMW 3 Series which is normally the leading model of choice worldwide. That’s a total of 70% of all BMWs in Norway.
Overall, BMW was able to sell 5,528 i3s globally despite all the criticisms with its range. The market is already excited for the performance-oriented BMW i3 coming up.
