Heidfeld: Singapore’s an unknown entity

The lights will soon be going out on the BMW Sauber F1 Team for the first time – or rather, they’ll be coming on: the Singapore Grand Prix will represent two premieres on the Formula One calendar. Not only will Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica be tackling a new circuit, they will be doing so under floodlights.

“It is quite simply an unknown entity,” said Nick Heidfeld ahead of the 15th race of the season for the BMW Sauber F1 Team. Neither the German nor his racing driver colleagues have ever competed in a Formula One event at night. “Maybe it will be ok, maybe not,” says Nick. “We don’t know what awaits us, especially if it rains – and at the moment there is every chance of there being a few drops of rain, particularly in the evening.”

While preparations in Singapore started quite a while ago, the BMW Sauber F1 Team drivers have not yet had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the extraordinary conditions under the floodlights. A night race represents a real challenge for Nick and Robert. Nick says: “Even if it looks well lit, I think it should have been possible to test it at least once in advance.”
