I just bought my first Porsche, coming August. A yellow 6 speed manual Porsche Cayman 2.7L with PASM adaptative suspension. From Stuttgart. Now, I've crossed the line of imprudence and proved that a father can actually take food from his son's mouth to feed his desires. To tell the truth, it is the most stressful thing I've ever taken on, worse than extramarital affair if there was ever one.

many many references to Cayman vs Cayman S. The best is not online (Chris Harris in GT Porsche this month). But online, here's one of the best. First Drive: 2007 Porsche Cayman

The original 5-speed manual for the Cayman is actually a VW Golf part. The 6-speed is the gem, from Getrag. I took this option.

PASM will equalize the suspension of both the Cayman and Cayman S. I took this option.

Which leaves the engine. The 2.7 is more rev happy, and lighter pistons and crank. It's simply more responsive to the accelerator pedal. You'd have to work hard to reach the correct torque. Doesn't that translate to more `fun'?

Not to mention the fuel and road tax savings.

5.4s vs 6.1 seconds? I could live with the 6.1, sure.

I just changed the color to white. I cannot imagine myself driving a yellow car. Out of the window goes the stupid idea. White is it.

Re: Need BMW regulars' information: BMW Z4 Coupe 3.0Si

Congratulations! White is always a good choice although harder to maintain.

Maybe you should tick the boxes for the red seat belts (friend of mine has them on his Cayman S and they look quite good actually), and get Cayman S brakes and wheels. I think that visually they really set off the car (although many prefer the smoother ride of the stock size).

Re: Need BMW regulars' information: BMW Z4 Coupe 3.0Si

I have sinned so much, I don't want to sin some more.

Unless I can afford forged wheels, I don't think I'll expand to 18. So many forum reports and reviews state that the 17s are really nice to use because thicker rubber and lower unsprung weight, unless on track when you need the laterals. And they ban the 19 inchers.

I am looking to some friends to source some nice light 2nd hand 18 inchers for me, see how. Anyway, until August, there's lots of time.

Re: Need BMW regulars' information: BMW Z4 Coupe 3.0Si

Well, maybe you should still consider the red seat belts. In a white car with a black or pebble grey interior, the red would really stand out. Must seem a bit OTT but it looked good in the flesh when I saw my friend's car. And I usually prefer low key stuff (the red on the quattro was the choice of the previous, first owner).

your quattro, how much does it cost you to maintain it every year?

Re: Need BMW regulars' information: BMW Z4 Coupe 3.0Si

Tax is over S$3k p.a. and insurance is under S$1k p.a. I do one change of fluids and filters each year which costs several hundred bucks with the various filters coming from a quattro specialist in the UK.

There are some other problems every now and then, as with any old car, but nothing major in the 9 years I have owned it. The last one was a weak brake pedal spring, which cost me GBP0.70 but took 3 weeks to arrive! The car was still driveable though.

That seals it!

You are the man!

Am perpetually feeling guilty for taking food/money etc off the family table for my incurable desire to buy/own cars.

Thanks for involving us in the personal mental anguish that you have gone through to make (from my ever so slightly biased point of view) the right decision. Given your initial 3 choices, I would have gone with exactly the same brand, same colour combo but would most probably have gone with the 3.4 despite knowing that the 2.7 would have

1. saved money
2. had a more usable performance envelope
3. been a sweeter car

But I suspect you are certainly not going to regret buying the 2.7....

Foxy has a good point/suggestion. Consider the red seat belts. Sounds crass but really works with either a white or black porker with black interiors. Having said that, it is something you can always retrofit.

Congrats!
