Will it make my car go faster after the ignition upgrade? Any downside of it?

It will, i dare say.

Downside...
You might imagine yourself so fast... you'll start jio'ing
WRXs, EVOs and the like.
Then find yourself in soup.

Jus some pics to show everyone how unique the design of the SPEC II plugs are.

Re: Spec II plugs are in...

Time to explain how the electrodes work...

Volker Spec II uses 2 pieces of Iridium electrodes to conduct the current to the point where the spark flashes across. Iridium has been chosen for its electrical and mechanical properties as its resistance and wear rates bodes well for the application as sparking points. As a general electrical conductor, iridium may not have the lowest resistance (when compared to copper, silver or gold) but used in the small amounts at the tips, their hardness allows for virtually no wear.

The thin electrode design also follows the laws of physics where sparks prefer sharp points to jump across. If you see a static electricity generator in the novelty shop, you can see the charge jump across to the glass bowl. When you raise a finger towards the bowl, the charge automatically goes towards that point. Insulators are made round for this exact reason. If that bowl were square, charges will only go to the nearest point and the display will suck. The shape minises the ionisation flash over by increasing the conducting path length. So for sparking purposes, sharp points reduces the ionisation voltage and concentrates the electrical charge to 1 point for greater intensity.

The tip has been designed as such to maximise the exposure of the spark to fuel&air molecules. The shrouding of the spark by the ground electrode may lead to a small vacuum in the sparking area when the mixture is being compressed by the piston. Hence the open design maximises the chances of sparking the mixture at the onset of the spark firing across.

The direction of fire also creates a flame front that maximises combustion pressures. Imagine an amount of explosive materials detonating in free space. The pressures radiate in all directions in an ever expanding sphere, losing speed as it travels along. If you place the same amount of explosives on a flat surface, the pressure wave that was supposed to travel into the surface is now being reflected backwards and it contributes toward the wave already in that direction. In a cylinder, this focuses the pressure wave along with the expanding gasses and this contributes to the torque available. There is 1 caveat though. At low engine speeds, the gains in terms of pressure wave alignment is lost due to slower combustion speed. A spark that protrudes more into the combustion chamber may place a spark in the center of the combustion chamber and this reduces the burn path and thus reduces the amount time required to reach peak cylinder pressure. I must stress that this is only for low engine speeds.

Thus if you are a rev happy kind of driver, the Spec II are the plugs for you. Else, go for the Spec I which utilises most of the design parameters listed above but at a lower cost.

cheers

Re: Spec II plugs are in...

For those who are still sitting on the fence, let me tell you guys my story.

While you are thinking what the Spec II plugs will do to your BMW, i already have them in my Fiat Grande Punto 1.4l 8 valves engine.

The plugs were those that were meant for the e46 M3 and i was lucky to have gotten my hands on them.

Lucky cause they made a hell lot of difference to the performance of my car, better acceleration, smooth engine. The small little engine was able to rev much faster and i have been able to overtake other cars on the road without downshifting.

Imagine what it will do to the bigger and better engines in your BMWs.....

Ask Benji how my car feels, he took a ride in my car last sat......
