Re: Disneyland in JB...M'sia Boleh or not
Disney 'has no plans for Malaysian park'
(BT May 31, 2006) LOS ANGELES - Walt Disney on Tuesday said it has no plans to build a theme park in Malaysia -- even though Malaysian government officials said they had been in talks to develop one. 'We are constantly exploring opportunities around the world as we look to grow our parks and resorts business. At this time, however, there are no existing discussions in Malaysia and we currently have no plans for a Disney-branded resort development in that country,' said Lisa Haines, a spokesman for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. 'Oriental Land Company, which owns and operates Tokyo Disney Resort as our licensee, is a valued partner; however, they have no role in evaluating or negotiating other opportunities for Disney outside of Japan,' Ms Haines said, after The Edge financial weekly reported over the weekend that Malaysian government officials have held talks with executives from Oriental Land, the Japanese company that operates Tokyo Disneyland, to run a similar park in Malaysia. Malaysian government officials said they are in talks to set up a Disney theme park in southern Johor state, as it battles neighbour Singapore to become a major tourist hub. -- REUTERS |

Re: Disneyland in JB...M'sia Boleh or not
Think of it in the other way. Given a choice, they would wanna do so. Why?
The Marina IR site has been awarded to Las Vegas Sands. So there will be a huge draw to Singapore in about 5-year time. Another one in Sentosa. Genting is bidding with a proposal on a theme park by Universal Studios, hence touted as a hot favourite for the Sentosa bid, especially after Capitaland/MGM and Keppel Land/Harrah's lost in the Marina bid. Panel awarding in a meritocratic manner as opposed to closer ties with quasi-GLCs. But did anyone notice that Genting was bidding for both sites? It simply means that Genting might be ready to shift operations to Singapore, and forego that in Malaysia. Like it or not, it will not be by choice. And I bet Malaysian government will have to pre-empt that move. Huge loss of tourism revenue to Singapore on (1) Genting's moves to Singapore (2) Singapore's new attraction...... One of my many conspiracy theories......

Re: Disneyland in JB...M'sia Boleh or not
I was just thinking a better idea for them is to consider building a theme park like dieney on cool Genting Highlands. Can u imagine if you are the one wearing the mickey mouse costume in hot sunny JB? Mickie will faint due to heat exhaustion...go on MC. I mean these are just the finer things which may make a great difference to success or failure.
