Saw this clip a couple of time already... it's a clip for joke. The airbag isn't that sensitive...

Re: This is why you don't drive a mercedes.

It does look quite authentic to me..

It seemed like the camera was originally for taking vids of the skateboarders, and they got distracted by the screeching of the tyres when the Merc driver jammed on the brakes when he saw the old lady.

Either that or it was a very well scripted show.

Re: This is why you don't drive a mercedes.

one tell tale sign that it is staged is that the air bag should not be deflated so easily. usually, it has to be cut or punctured in order to free the driver. However, I mihgt be wrong.

Re: This is why you don't drive a mercedes.

The air bag, does not stay inflated for >1sec. The bag is not air tight as the weave of the nylon bag is very porus. What happens is that the nitrogen and carbon dioxide gases that form after the ignition of the charge, inflates the bag to burst out of the cover. Thereafter, the bag reaches full size as there is way more gas than the volume of the bag. Excess gas passes through the weave and keeps the bag inflated for 0.5 to 1 sec. The bag then deflates. That 0.5-1 sec is enough to cushion your impact.

From a driver point of view, in the event of a crash, you should see a flash followed by the limp bag in your lap.

I think the ad is a fake cos the SRS system does not operate the airbags when the vehicle speed is < 25km/h or so. I remembered reading somewhere that at such speeds, the inflation of the bag causes more harm than the actual hit.

Cheers
