Routine Software Upgrade

I'll be sending in my E65 to PML for a 'software upgrade' soon.
I know that software upgrades are done periodically ( routinely ) during service intervals, or sometimes during vehicle recall exercises.

Does anyone knows exactly what software is 'upgraded' during the routine upgrade sessions?
Is the software for everything eg. ECU mapping, Nav system, emissions control, transmission, etc, updated or is it only for selected systems?

I know that BMW routinely does this for all their cars but do other Japanese manufacturers do that too?

Software upgrade can be part or full mapping depending on what needs to be addressed.

And it only usually happend on new car and not a periodic thingee...

Our EPROM in the ECU can only be re-programmed 13 time safely, afterwhich the ECU needs to be replaced.
