E36 DIY Steering Rack Repair
my steering rack was leaking oil at bottom end of the steering shaft. the condition is quite bad, to the point that a few drops of oil will drip to the ground when I park my car. The leaking should be from the steering shaft's seals or “O”rings. I studied the following link and planned to DIY myself.
Rebuild your ZF steering rack on an E30 BMW
Although this link is on how to repairing E30, method used for E36 is almost the same.
I decide not to rebuild the whole thing, but do a quick and cheap job by just repairing the part where the oil is leaking. I bought a repair kit from Eng Soon for $58. It would have cost me almost a thousand dollars to replace a new one! Big saving...
Removed the tie rod at the driver's side only, U-joint shaft and hydraulic lines. Next, placed the whole steering rack on the ground. Then removed the steering shaft and tension bearing. Replaced two seals and one “O”ring at steering shaft. Then replaced two "O"rings at tension bearing. Lastly, put everything back, and got the job done in 3hours.
After repair, no more oil leaking!
