How to steer clear of 'kopi money' trap

I REFER to last Tuesday's report, ''Kopi money' risk', and wish to share more than 10 years of experience driving my Malaysian wife to her hometown.
We travel on the North-South Highway via the Second Link two weekends a month. My experience is that 90 per cent of speed traps are not official operations - that is, no speeding tickets can be issued. They are typically informal set-ups focusing on stopping cars with Singapore licence plates.
Drivers from Singapore have encouraged a burgeoning cottage industry by fishing out Malaysian currency every time they are stopped. Instead of scrapping plans to drive to Malaysia, we should abandon the temptation to bribe the police.
Try this the next time you are stopped at a road block for speeding, illegal U-turns or whatever supposed reason:
Officers on a genuine police operation issue tickets immediately. Call the bluff of those who linger and hint that you might want to 'settle on the spot' - for example, RM100 (S$43) instead of RM300 - or save yourself the trouble of paying the fine at some distant location. Ask for the ticket immediately.
I no longer bother to argue that I was not speeding. Owing to the frequency of my visits to Malaysia, I regularly get stopped no matter what speed I might be doing. They invariably pretend to write down my details or simply wave me off.
I have even overheard some policemen say in Malay to let me go and focus on others (who might pay).
Over the years, I have not been issued tickets and have saved thousands simply by not bribing.
For those who do receive tickets, you do not need to go out of your way to pay the fines. Counters are occasionally opened at the Malaysian Customs. All existing fines, including those from automated speed cameras, can be conveniently settled there.
Naturally, those who want to give 'kopi money' at such or other operations are inviting arrest.

hiadee, u did the exact opposite of me

aaa.....they ask for your IC leh when they say they issue you the ticket? My friend kena asked for NRIC bcos he asked for $300 ticket and they actually took his NRIC away without wanting to return.

Just to clarify, the letter wasn't written by me. I just cut & paste from ST.

As for me, when i kena stopped, i always hand them driving license. I never gave my NRIC.

Re: TP Bribe in Malaysia? This may change your mind....

Its been reconfirmed that the market rate is M$50.

I realised lately there is no more road blocks, maybe the MACC is checking on those TP who are not actually TPs but set up fun-fair stalls on the NSH asking SG drivers to buy funfair tickets. Here;s how it went for your truly recently. Anyway I dount they clocked my speed, just an act to get additional income.

"TP" was just a trio in a police car-proton perdana. NBB hiding on the road side and turn on his siren lights only when I am within 50m of him and starts to tail me for another 200m .

'Oii Beng, why u go so fast'
'as usual lah rushing to genting to gamble, late already all my friends in front'
'the fine is M$300'
'aiya, ok gimme the summon' (change in tactics)
'u can settle for $100 beng'
'I think $50 will do encik if u can help me, I help u also. BTW got a who convoy of BMW coming up soon with stickers, arranged by BMW club U can stop them also, I give u tips u give me discount boleh?'
'ok $50, u can pass to me here'
'BTW encik what is my speed u clocked?'
'about 140kmh to 150kmh...very serios u know'
'yeah yr country big lah if drive at 100kmh my friends say I late. not so good lah. BTW nowadays, no more road block anymore ah?'
'sometimes have lah...further up in PEDAS sometimes'
'ok see you'
'ok drive slowly ah'

I have also seen several times, road block at the winding exit from NS towards Tuas, just before the first of 3 toll booths if you are returning to Sg. The cam is somewhere 4-5km before the exit, so need to slow down at least 4km before the exit. Damn sneaky, this one, cos they are on the exit and no one travelling in the opposite direction can see them and give the usual highbeam warnings.
Motor bike chase car....reminds me of Tuas development decades ago...Slam on the breaks when they chase you and you will send them 1st Class Air-Ticket.

I usually travel up north after dark, no roadblocks, no speed trap.
