BMW confirms the new N20 four-cylinder engine will be used in 1 & 3 Series cars

BMW confirms that the new four-cylinder TwinPower engine will be powering an extensive range of 1 and 3 Series vehicles in an interview for German Automotive Week. BMW is looking to replace all six-cylinder naturally aspirated engines from their line-up and a new range of four-cylinder engines will be the replacement. Here is a report from BMW Blog:
Source: BMW BlogAccording to BMW, six-cylinder engine will continue to be featured in their vast line-up, a prestigious powerplant for the company. These engines will be equipped with direction injection and turbocharger.
The new N20 four-cylinder engines offers more torque and power, while having lower fuel consumption. The engine will be first used in the new X1 xDrive28i and produces 245 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque (258 lb of torque).
The engine can be matted to a 6-speed manual transmission or a 8-speed automatic transmission.
In the EU test cycle, the BMW X1 xDrive28i runs with 7.9 liters/100 km or 35.7 mpg imp (an improvement of 1.5 liters / 5.7 mpg), has CO2 emissions of 183 g/km (down by 38g).
Closely modelled on the BMW in-line six-cylinder engines, the all-new 2.0-litre engine with all-aluminium crankcase comes with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology features high-performance twin-scroll turbocharging system, High Precision Injection direct petrol injection with innovative solenoid injectors, and the latest further enhanced version of the BMW-patented VALVETRONIC variable valve control system.
A smaller engine, dubbed N13, will follow. The four-cylinder banger will be shared between BMW and MINI models and it has a capacity of 1.6 liters. The power range of the N13 and N20 will vary from 100 to 245 horsepower and the new 1 Series vehicles will make use of both powerplants. We anticipate an entry-level 3 Series from the new generation to be powered by one or more four-cylinder variants.Cheers,

F30 320 could be 1.6T. Everybody will be happy. Lower road tax & higher pwr/torque.
But hor, front overhang might look very empty.

I was right...the new 2.0T will deliver 245bhp/350Nm and it make more sense to offer a 1.6L turbo for entry level rather than detune the 2.0L block...
Turbo is the way to go to meet the Euro emmission std and fuel consumption with crude oil hitting new high everyday...
