    Can Door Handle be replaced?

Bought a piece of door handle and thought i can DIY, after taking a close look at the melted plastic from the inside, its hot-pressed installed using a special tool in BMW factory.

Anyway, just to share a pic here if anyone knows this can be done locally.

1st pic is the new handle, circled in RED is meant to be installed into the panel.

After the hot press process, it become a nice rounded button-like which is damn strong.

    thanks

Re: Can Door Handle be replaced?

I have this problem too, the panels peeling off. Some is one piece part with the switches, expensive.

    I am thinking:

    1) Use paint striper to remove the paint.
    2) Spray paint, now still looking for this: Alsa Corp | Soft Feeling Paint
    3) Fix it back.

I've changed my interior trims myself, already know how to take the door apart.

hmmm ... will open up within next weekend and see if can figure out... is the material hard plastic? (fibre type? or just abs?)

juz a guess: plastic cutters might do the trick to cut the 'rounded/molded heads, and then can remove the old handles. as for putting in the new ones, i believe some tapping screws and washers might do the trick, and in fact, its removable.

onli thing is: gotta be very careful abt the airbag discharge points/locations. must make sure the screws added does not become a projectile in case airbag fires.

its made of ABS/ hard plastic, i was thinking of using some screws to tighten but dont have the guts to do for fear stripping the leather panel. more $$$$

unless there's a proven safe steps that we can follow to reduce the possible damage to the lowest.

i was thinking using a screw + a washer to install from the inside panel, but not sure if its long lasting enough for daily-grabbing open-closing action?

have not seen any airbag from the inside of door panel. but i think the airbag explotion point is not anywhere near the handle/ armrest since these parts are strongly fitted against the panel and airbag is unlikely find its way out from there, so airbag point is somewhere else...IMO

PS: BMW has improved some interior parts (which were prone to peeling) to a better quality, the new handle feels like a layer of soft plastic melted into the surface which is durable.

if they can do this to the center console, i will change it right away saving the trouble to paint it.

i have previously checked with Mike@SWC, painting interior trims does not look OEM and its small money with lots of dismantling/installation work to do. Best is to change.

but this soft paint looks very promising with the velvet touch which is pretty ideal for interior, but the thing is whether there's a color code matches our interior BMW color?

will check with Mike again if he is willing to do it, i want to do to the center console.

center console is cheap to replace, Eng Soon selling a bit over 100 dollars only.

The thing is the door panel where the window switches are located, are not cheap because comes with the switches.

DIsmantling is not a problem for me. DIY a bit is fun. haha. I changed my own trims all over already. But you need some torx screw driver.

By the way, when tightening any screws, can consider to put some loctite 243.

    And do not overtighten.

Re: Can Door Handle be replaced?

ok, have to bring up this post as i 'just' found the part no. for the 'screws' for the "Handle".

So, my question is how would you dismantle the old handle? since they are somewhat heat-treated-melted kinda' fittings. Would you Drill/ Dremel/ Solder-Melt...??

Ordered the screws with washers (OEM BMW part no.). Or simply drive to my trusthy SWC for help?

    Thanks

Re: Can Door Handle be replaced?

    Tom,

Which parts did you order for the screws and washer? I'm having the same problem with my '06 330i here in the states and I'd like to replace the handle as well. I ordered the new handle parts to find out the same as you that they are molded into the panel.
